Old Faithful erupting in Yellowstone National Park on the first day of the 2019 season. It's not the biggest geyser in the park, but it is the most predictable, which is how it got its name in 1870.

Fun facts

  • Eruptions come roughly every hour and a half to two hours, and rangers can predict the next one to within about ten minutes. source ↗
  • Each eruption throws up to about 32,000 litres (8,400 gallons) of boiling water as high as 55 metres (180 feet). source ↗
  • The intervals have grown longer over the decades, partly because earthquakes have changed the plumbing underground. source ↗
  • Yellowstone has more than 500 geysers, over half of all the active geysers on Earth. source ↗
