Trivialism ("we," "us," or "our") operates a cross-platform multiplayer trivia game available on web, mobile (iOS and Android), and Discord (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- Account Information: Username, email address, and password when you create an account.
- Profile Information: Display name, avatar, and other optional profile details.
- Communications: Messages you send through in-game chat, support requests, and feedback.
- Payment Information: Payment processing is handled by Apple (App Store), Google (Google Play), or our third-party payment processor. We do not store full payment card details.
1.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Device Information: Device type, operating system, unique device identifiers, browser type, and language preferences.
- Usage Data: Game sessions, scores, achievements, interactions with other players, features used, and time spent in the Service.
- Log Data: IP address, access times, pages viewed, and referring URLs.
- Cookies: See our Cookie Policy for details.
1.3 Information from Third Parties
- Discord: If you access the Service through Discord — our bot, or the Trivialism Activity inside a voice channel — we receive your Discord user ID, username, display name and avatar. We do not receive your email address there. We use your Discord user ID to keep a Trivialism account for you, so your scores and stats follow you between Discord and the website. If you sign in to our website with Discord, we also receive the email address on your Discord account, as permitted by Discord's API and your Discord privacy settings. If Discord has verified that address and it already belongs to a Trivialism account, we combine your Discord progress into that account so you have one account rather than two. Discord shows you exactly which permissions you are granting before you accept. We do not use Discord information for advertising, and we do not share it with advertising networks. Product analytics for the Discord Activity are described in section 2.1; you can object with the Activity settings toggle, and we do not send Activity data to Google. When you delete your Trivialism account, the Discord information we hold about you is deleted with it — see our Data Retention Policy.
- Social Logins: If you sign in via a third-party service (e.g., Google, Apple), we receive your name, email, and profile picture as authorized by you.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, operate, and maintain the Service.
- Create and manage your account.
- Facilitate multiplayer gameplay, leaderboards, and social features.
- Process transactions and send related information.
- Send administrative communications (service updates, security alerts, support messages).
- Analyze server-side game and email data in pseudonymous form to improve the Service.
- Detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, and technical issues.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information.
2.1 Product analytics
We carry out product analytics to understand how the Service is used and to improve questions, games, and reliability. The legal basis is our legitimate interests (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f) and UK GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)). This is pseudonymous analysis of server-side game and email data, such as games played and records of emails we send. We do not use this analysis for advertising. We do not use minors' data for per-player analytics.
You can object to product analytics at any time. On the website and in the mobile app, turn on Exclude me from product analytics under Account > Privacy. In the Discord Activity, use the same control in Activity settings. You can also email [email protected]. Turning on Opt out of all data sharing, submitting a "Do Not Share My Personal Information" request, or sending a Global Privacy Control signal is also treated as an objection. When you object, we stop per-player product analytics for you and purge the related per-player analytics data within 30 days.
We use Plausible, a cookieless analytics tool that we host ourselves at stats.trivialism.com, on the website, the mobile apps, and the Discord Activity. Plausible records aggregate statistics on our own infrastructure. It does not use cookies, and we do not send it your name, email address, account identifier, or Discord user ID.
Google Analytics (GA4) is separate. It is opt-in and used on the website only, and only after you turn analytics on in the cookie banner. We do not load GA4 in the mobile apps or the Discord Activity, and we do not send Activity data to Google.

4. How We Share Your Information
We may share your information with:
- Service Providers: Third parties that perform services on our behalf (hosting, analytics, payment processing). These providers are contractually obligated to use your data only as directed by us.
- Other Players: Your username, avatar, scores, and gameplay activity are visible to other players as part of the multiplayer experience.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request.
- Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will provide notice before your data is subject to a different privacy policy.
- With Your Consent: We may share information for other purposes with your explicit consent.
4.1 Advertising
We use Google AdSense to display advertisements on our web platform. Third parties, including Google, use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure ads — including personalized ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites — and to help detect and prevent ad fraud. Where required by law, these non-essential cookies are set only after you provide consent through our cookie banner.
You can opt out of personalized advertising through your Google Ad Settings, or opt out of many third-party vendors at aboutads.info (US) and Your Online Choices (EU). For more on how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see Google's notice. See our Cookie Policy for the specific advertising cookies we use.
We also use Infolinks to show in-text advertising on our web platform. Infolinks reads the text of the page you are viewing to choose relevant keywords and ads, so the words on that page — which can include player display names — are processed by Infolinks. Infolinks and its advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to deliver and measure these ads. Infolinks loads only after you turn on "Marketing & Personalisation" in our cookie banner; with that off, you will not see Infolinks ads. For visitors in the EEA, Infolinks states that it serves contextual ads only and does not use personal data for ad targeting. Infolinks does not run on account, admin, sign-in or legal pages, or in the Discord Activity. See Infolinks' Privacy Policy.
We are trialling TrafficStars to show display advertising on our reading content only — blog articles, Photo of the Day, and the quiz archive index. TrafficStars and its advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to deliver and measure these ads. TrafficStars loads only after you turn on “Marketing & Personalisation” in our cookie banner; with that off, no TrafficStars script is loaded at all. It does not run during gameplay, on account, admin, sign-in or legal pages, or in the Discord Activity. See TrafficStars' Privacy Policy.
5. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries outside your country of residence, including the United States. When we transfer personal data from the EEA or UK, we use appropriate safeguards including Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) and UK International Data Transfer Agreements where applicable.
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy. See our Data Retention Policy for full details.
- Account data: Retained while your account is active and for 30 days after deletion request.
- Gameplay data: Retained while your account is active; anonymized after account deletion.
- Support correspondence: Retained for up to 2 years after resolution.
- Legal/compliance records: Retained as required by applicable law.
7. Your Rights
7.1 All Users
You may access, update, or delete your account information through the Service settings, opt out of marketing communications, or request a copy of your data by contacting us.
7.2 EEA/UK Users (GDPR / UK GDPR)
You have the right to: access, rectification, erasure ("right to be forgotten"), restriction of processing, data portability, objection to processing, withdrawal of consent, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Your right to object includes product analytics, as described in section 2.1.
7.3 California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)
You have the right to know, delete, correct, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To opt out of sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising, use the "Do Not Share My Personal Information" link in our footer or honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals.
8. Children's Privacy
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. See our Children's Privacy Policy for full details.
9. Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, access controls, and regular security assessments. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
